Music

I’m decently capable of performing some mid-level classical piano pieces. I’m not sure if I dare to call myself a “classically trained pianist”, because that would imply a lot of other things that come with training and pianists. But at least I can perform some pieces halfway decently. Enough to get a Performer’s Certificate. (It’s now known as a Advanced Performance Certificate, apparently.)

Well, the thing is that somehow I just can’t get a firm grip of lyrics in songs, no matter the genre. Apart from the National Anthem, maybe. Somehow only tunes stick in my head – which is pretty awkward since I can only hum along when people are singing along to guitars and iPods.

Much as pop lyrics are pretty much gutter trash nowadays (as chronicled by The New Yorker recently: it’s a good read), I don’t think that explains everything, since I can hardly remember the words to traditional hymns and songs either. But the tunes, yes!

I’m not very musically inclined either, so I can’t really blame playing songs without words since forever. Hmm. So strange.

In other news, I think I’m gonna miss my goal of getting halfway decent at pool before I finish my national service. I’m simply not clocking the hours that other people clock on the table everyday, in fact, I think I’ve barely clocked an hour or two on it in months. Oh dear.
